What does a 21st century miracle look like?

The very fact that I’m able to write this article today is a miracle, and I’m not even exaggerating. Let me back up.

Twenty-four hours ago, after three solid weeks of working around the clock, Jason and I felt like my new website was just about “there.” Yes, there were small tweaks we still needed to make, and yes, there were still a million edits needed on my old posts, but we were ready to declare DONE on this phase of the project. Only one small bug needed to be fixed before I went “live,” and he offered to research the problem for me because I was running late for a meeting.

A few hours later, my phone rang. “Don’t hate me,” he said, “but I think I lost the website.”

My heart skipped a beat. You what?! What do you mean, you lost it? How could it be gone?

Sure enough, he was right. The whole thing was missing, replaced by a sterile, blank, white screen. (And of course we hadn’t backed it up yet, because, obviously, we’re dangerous like that.)

My poor husband. He tried to restore the site, but nothing worked. As soon as I got home, I checked again. Nothing. Still completely erased. I wanted to cry.

Instead, I put the kids to bed and started an online chat with my hosting company, ready to pay a million dollars for a miracle. I explained my problem and asked if there was anything they could do. Anything at all. I have four children, surely one of them would be payment enough. I held my breath while I waited for an answer.

At last I got a reply. “I’m looking at your site right now, and it looks great.”

Excuse me, what? I opened a new window and checked for myself. Sweet-glory-hallelujah-praise-Jesus-she’s-right! It was back! The whole site! All of our work! All of our hours. Every last detail. It was restored and resurrected, and no one had lifted a finger!

No one except God.

I know this pales in comparison to the Red Sea or the immaculate conception, but a miracle is still a miracle, whether it’s B.C. or 21st century. The Lord has given us so many modern conveniences – like medicine, transportation, communication and technology – that we don’t always give Him the credit He deserves. Sometimes it even feels silly to call something a miracle when it’s not a matter of life or death.

But God is still a God of miracles. He is still ready to wow you. Ready to surprise you. Ready to answer your prayers in ways only He can. He doesn’t always choose to step in with miracles, but when He does, it’s amazing!

What a wonderful reminder that the God who made the universe cares about the little things in our lives. He cares about our websites, our cars, the computers we use to pay bills. He cares about your oven when it stops working or your dog when he gets sick.

It matters to Him because YOU matter to Him.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a website I need to backup.

What 21st century miracles has the Lord performed in your own life recently?
