Every year, Nikon hosts a photography contest called The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. It’s a competition that celebrates the beautiful combination of microscopes and photography. Scientists-turned-photographers from all over the world submit images of microscopic detail that no one would ever be able to see with the naked eye.
This was the 2011 2nd place photo that caught my eye. Can you guess what it is?

It’s a blade of grass!
Isn’t that amazing?! When I saw the intricate, minute detail that lies within the microscopic nuances of such an ordinary, boring thing as a blade of grass, I had three thoughts.
1. I felt a little guilty for trampling all over the grass in my yard and never even thinking twice about stomping on such beauty. But then I remembered, it’s grass. It’s supposed to be walked on. That’s its purpose in life. And the guilt subsided.
2. I was in awe of God’s artistic abilities. He created that! And while I’ve always been encouraged by those big, beautiful displays of creation – mountains, rainbows, lightning, oceans – I often forget about the smaller aspects of creation that are just as magnificent. Water droplets. Blood cells. Strands of hair. Blades of grass. God didn’t save His creativity for the big ticket items! He poured Himself into all of it!
3. I was encouraged. When I saw how beautiful that blade of grass looked under a microscope, I remembered this verse: “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” Matt. 6:30 God doesn’t just take care of us; He takes great care of us!
You probably know that God has a purpose for your life. He sees the big picture and He knows your part in it. But did you know that He cares about the small things as well? He cares about your friendships, your struggles at work, your diet, your car trouble. All of it. So you don’t have to reserve God for the big things in your life. He wants to be in the small things too.
Are you worried about the small things in life? Read Matt. 6:25-34, then check out the rest of the small world photos for more examples of how God cares about the small things.
Q: How has God shown you that He cares about the small things?
Dear Laurie,
I do so love the Now Glo-ing 24/7 sign. I have been listening to my CD bundle and of course I struck over several nuggets that were there for me. At this point I have the WOW factor just like I did when I stumbled upon the Biblically Beautiful woman. I loved the Glo photos from the conference. I have been strengthened so much. I thank you and I thank God for the work he has done preparing you the Glo! These teachings strongly remind me to think on all things about being a reflector of God’s glory. thanks for the sacrifice of the blog; you, Jan and Emily have lifted the hearts of women to work and do greater works. Words just cannot express where I am and where is is leading me to. The blog gives me so much. I am a fan of the scripture art and I am definitely using it. Keep writing girls. Keep shaping the hearts of women for his service. PS I absolutely loved the backdrop for the stage setting of the Glo girl conference. and yes, I need to know where the BLING BROOCH can be found!
