Does God really know everything?

In exploring our series, What is God really like?, a fair question to ask is, Does God really know everything? And to put it plainly, yes, yes He does.

God is omniscient, or more simply, He is all-knowing. His knowledge is not limited by time, space or darkness. And He doesn’t have to process His thoughts in order to comprehend them; He just knows.

omniscient, does god know everything

The important thing to remember is that just because God knows all things it does not mean that He predetermines all things. Man still has free will and the freedom to make any choice he desires. But because God’s knowledge is immediate, He knows man’s choices before he even makes them.

For example, I know that Cinderella’s evil stepmother locks Cinderella in the tower when the Grand Duke comes to visit with the glass slipper. But knowing that event will happen does not mean I cause it to happen.

That God knows the future is impressive enough, but His knowledge is even deeper than that. He knows the thoughts and the heart of everyone.

I love how David explains it in Psalm 139:

O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Depending on your relationship with God, His omniscience is either a blessing or a bother. For most, it comes with a sweet sigh of relief. God knows you. He knows you even better than you know yourself. He knows your day dreams and your nightmares. He knows what you worry about. He knows how much you love your family. He knows what you need and what you want.  He knows how fragile you are and how strong you can be.

Nothing surprises God.

When you’re in the kitchen and the phone rings with information that brings you to your knees, you can have peace that God knew ahead of time what was coming.

When you’re in your bed crying because no one understands you, you can rest assured that the One who created you understands you completely.

When you’re in your living room trying to figure out your problems, you can be assured that God knows your struggles.

Omniscient is a big word. But it simply means that He knows your heart, He sees the future, and He has the answers.
