There are moments when you don’t have time for long, wordy prayers to God. You’re in the trenches. You’re at the end of your rope. You’re in the middle of life and just can’t push the pause button.
Other times, you couldn’t formulate a prayer even if you had all the time in the world. Your mind feels like a spider web. Your emotions are pulling you down like quicksand. Your heart lies broken on the ground and everyone you know seems to be dancing on the pieces.
We’ve all been there. Your heart wants to talk to God, but the chaos and noise of the moment don’t allow for “pretty” prayers. You need something you can whisper in a single breath. Something concise. Something that can hold you over until you can gather your thoughts, get away, and spend quality time with God.
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to explore several 5-word prayers that you can whisper in those moments.
These prayers are so simple, you’ll wonder if they can even be effective. But coupled with a heart that is bent towards God, they can be just as powerful as the poetic psalms of David. They’re not meant to replace those dedicated, prayer-closet quiet times that you spend talking with God. They’re just meant to bridge the gap in between them.
I hope you’ll join me for this super-simple, but oh-so-effective series:
We’ll take a look at the first one next Tuesday. See you then!
Q: What do you think the first 5-word prayer will be?

So looking forward to this! I am living that chaos right now! I was thinking this morning that my prayer life is not doing so hot (mostly because I am so in overwhelmed mode) and I really need to get a gameplan! When I talk to God, my heart is more at peace! I am working on it, and this will be a great thing to get me going and encouraged 🙂 Excited for this series!
In the heat, panic, (one of our grand-babies swallowed a metal disc & in those first moments, 30 minutes, we didn’t know which way it went down & she was chocking), chaos…a trailer came loose from the truck In front of me going down Hwy.290….it zinged, zagged, hit a truck to my right, flew back in front of me, thankfully it kept going & didn’t flip over on top of me but it went through the median then was traveling west at the “””oncoming”” traffic, caught again, went into the ditch, became airborne, tore through a pasture fence & landed in it “””upright & drivable!!!!! BOTH TIMES lives, (I had a 6 year old granddaughter with me when the trailer came loose), were in imminent danger! There was but one Word I could utter……..JESUS! Even at the mention of His name we are “in His hands”……affording us safety, protection, strength, power to overcome……and the list goes on…………..
Is that it?
“Help me follow Your plan.”
Oooh, that’s a good one. It’s not on my list, but I like it!
I’m really looking forward to this! I’m in those trenches right now and have been for some time. I have memorized scripture since I was young and have always claimed those when I’ve been in past trenches. This season of my life and what all is going on with my family is very difficult fir me and itis taking its toll on me. I feel like I’m floundering. I can’t find the words to pray and none of the scriptures are coming to mind for me to claim when I need them. I’m looking forward to Tuesday!
Thank you
I hope they will help! I know it’s helped me tremendously to boil my thoughts and prayers down to 5 simple words. I guess it’s kind of like sending God a text message. 🙂 It doesn’t replace those times when we need long conversations with Him, it just helps us keep connected in the meantime.
God, I need grace now!
I like that one too!!
So I’m laughing at myself now….I got it backwards. And that’s what I get for being in a hurry as I saw, “5 one word prayers”. So, here’s my “5 word” prayer. Not my will but Yours.
Ha! Yes, if we were looking at 5-letter prayers, J-E-S-U-S would be a great one! So would, Oh, God! which is what I usually end up whispering.
But for 5-word prayers – YOU’RE RIGHT!
“Not my will, but yours” is the first one we’ll look at next Tuesday! Great job, Debbie!
