5-Word Prayers #8: Not my glory, but yours

Has God ever surprised you? Has He ever given you a front row seat to a miracle? Have His blessings ever left you in awe?

One of my favorite chapters of the Bible is Psalm 8. Verses 3 and 4 read: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”

In other words, why in the world does the God of the universe allow little ole me to have purpose in His infinite plans?

It is humbling, to say the least, but it happens.

He uses housewives and teachers and grandmothers and cashiers. He blesses children and lawyers and custodians and waiters. His blessings are color blind, gender neutral, and do not discriminate against age, height, weight or hair color.

All He looks for is a willing, obedient heart.

And when He finds that in you, and blesses or uses you to a degree that brings you to your knees in humility, sometimes the only response you can utter is the five-word prayer, “Not my glory, but Yours.”

glory

When you pray, “Not my glory, but Yours,” you acknowledge several things:

  • It’s not about you.
  • It’s ALL about Him.
  • God is the giver of blessings.
  • You are merely the custodian of those blessings.
  • With every blessing, you will point others to Him and away from you.

So many times, people miss the point of His blessings. They waste their beautiful voices by singing songs that do not honor the Lord. They use their knowledge and education to run corrupt companies and organizations. They waste their wealth on substances that destroy their bodies.

When I see people take their blessings and use them for evil, I always wonder how much more could have been done if they had just channeled their blessings for the Lord.

None of us are immune to this desire to use our talents, our treasures, and our time for our own personal gain. That’s why it’s so important to remind yourself often of this truth. Everything you have, everything you are, is for His glory.

  • When you’re tempted to relish the limelight.
  • When you’re tempted to waste your money.
  • When you’re tempted to make a name for yourself.
  • When you’re tempted to hoard your belongings.
  • When you don’t think you’re good enough.
  • When you think you’re too good.
  • Whenever you’re in awe of His blessings.

Pray these words, “Not my glory, but Yours,” and return your thoughts to the correct perspective with just a whisper.
